Black Dragon is MY Viewer, i decide which feature i want to add and which to remove, i share this Viewer to show the world that user base size is not important, i do rate quality by effort, thought and love put into the project, not some rough estimated numbers. I consider feature requests only if i you can name proper valid reasons i can agree on. It is my (unpaid) time i'm putting into this project, i'm not here to cater to every Joe's desires.

Black Dragon Viewer 64x - Update 5.4.4 "Volumetric Dragon"

Open your ocular receptors for they will be chromatically aberrated with this minor increase in numerical versioning.

For eons have people demanding Volumetric Lighting back, for it broke with PBR and i was unsure whether i would be able to fix it as PBR changed a lot of things around. Today however i have very positive news about that, as today marks the day of the return of Volumetric Lighting!

But keen eyes will notice that there's MORE! Don't worry it is not your ocular receptors that fail you, it is Chromatic Aberration that is back too! Oh and it comes in two flavors now. You can now choose between having Chromatic Aberration always on as before or you can have it only in Depth of Field, this means only the blurred parts are aberrated.

You know, i'm not saying it looks nice, but it looks NICE!

That's not all though! Greyscale, Sepia and Posterization are now also available without having Tone Mapping or HDR enabled, Posterization now also affects Volumetric Lighting AND Glow as well!

We aren't stopping there! The POSER has gotten the promised pose synchronization last time, however it was only possible to synchronize your own pose to someone else, with this update it becomes possible to synchronize someone elses pose to them, so YES you can FINALLY see being posed!

(Please keep in mind that this whole system abuses IM messages. That means if you sync too much stuff you'll be hit with an IM limit which will break syncing half-way through. I'm working on a solution for that. Also still you can only do this if both of you are on Black Dragon. NO this does NOT work with Firestorm, stop asking)

It might be unreliable, it might be buggy, it might break completely. Again keep in mind this is SUPER HACKY and abuses IMs to do its job, this is NOT meant as the final solution, this is merely an experiment and a preview for Linden Labs to show them how it would look like and that it can work for when we ultimately (hopefully) get this to the Official Viewer with server side sync.

One last honorable mention: People have been complaining about the login screen video talking terrorist speak when it ends (which it shouldn't... but...). This was due to the Youtube embed function defaulting to Turkish or something due to the inability to detect your preferred language via cookies. I've now forced the embed link to prefer english so no more people getting afraid they got their Viewer hacked or something.

Anyway, here's something less positive to say:

A while ago i was contacted by a long time patreon patron who was unhappy with the lack of communication (assuming they meant the Viewer not getting updates nor messages on Discord) who ultimately ended his patronage after 4 years.

Let me say that i feel you.

I'm sorry for the lack of updates and communication. Life has been steadily getting harder and you aren't the only one who dropped out of Patreon. Over time the amount of people subscribed to Patreon has steadily declined to the point i could no longer keep up with the increasing demands of my dirty capitalist country so for several months now i've been falling short on cash, at first i was able to churn through with some saved up money but it never recovered and i was eventually forced to make a decision, either end it here or find another way.

I was determined to make it work somehow... it's only a couple eurons missing right? So i started taking comissions after several people requested them, told me i should do comissions because they are eager to pay for my work. So aside from working on the Viewer and my other million projects as well as juggling real life and friends, i'm now also juggling comissions to earn that little bit of missing cash.

This took away time from the Viewer obviously, which resulted in the development getting slower and slower and more and more comissions had to be taken to make up for the steadily increasing lack of patreon funds. This created a death spiral, more comissions, less development, less patrons, less money, more comissions and so on...

I didn't say anything because i didn't want to worry anyone nor do i want to beg for money, after all if people don't want to support me anymore then that's their choice and a completely legit reason. No one is forcing anyone to support me but as much as i don't want to say it, the Viewer does depend on me and i depend on this money... and with the grips tightening to the point that i feel like i can no longer offset the missing funds and with that one message giving me a big wake up call, i think it might finally time to say it: I do not think i can make this work much longer, the next month might already not work out anymore. So unless this somehow stabilizes again we will soon have to switch from very little communication to no communication... as in shutting the light off.

I hate saying this but: the Viewer is dying.

Patreon is what kept the Viewer alive. Everyone who financially supported me kept this Viewer alive several many more years than anticipated. Thank you everyone for that.

(For anyone interested in the exact numbers, 400 was chosen as the Patreon "goal" because it covers the mandatory health insurance (265€ / ~310$) and internet provider cost (55€ / ~65$). That is with conversion from $ to € that was enough.)

Anyway, i hope you like the update, the return of Volumetric Lighting, it has been a long ride.

  3. Losing you would be a huge blow to the SL community — like, “how do we even function now?” level. You’ve put in so much time, energy, and heart, and half the time it feels like people don’t even notice. It’s frustrating — like some folks were raised by gremlins and taught zero appreciation.

But seriously, thank you for everything you’ve done to make SL a better place. Your impact is real, even if not everyone says it. We see you, and we’re grateful — even if the rest of the world is still catching up.

  4. I am sorry to see you go, you really made the SL blogging more intriguing with your work. I do hope there is still chance, lil bit but still a chance that you continue to do your magic :) I can't say how sad i am that this turned up this way but i wish you all the best in the future!

  5. Where can we donate to keep this viewer going? You said the cost is 400$. There are thousands of users on SL, bloggers & people who just love to take photos. If 400 people or more can commit to donating just 1$ each we can reach your monthly payment goal.

  9. WELL... Lindenlab´, this would be your chance to offer a person a Job. Or be like lets fund that Viewer.. Since this is the MAIN place where people take their pictures. We have to keep it alive!

    2. Do you have instagram? A large number of the sl community resides on there, and a lot of people are starting to post about it. If you don't, I'd suggest making one and posting about it. Creators make BANK on this platform, most of them using your viewer for their stories, ads and just regular posts. They should be donating or are up first in terms of helping. I'm just making my patreon account but im about to subscribe monthly. Idk if my help will be enough but i hope others will do the same. legitimately cannot take IW pics with anything other than BD lol

    3. I do not have Instagram. I try to stay away from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and all that stuff. The only thing i frequent is Reddit and then mostly just reading and mostly just a handful of game reddits to keep updated with changes, i only post when i think i have something interesting to say.

While it is true that there are a lot of great free tools out there (GIMP and Blender for instance) and they do mostly rely on donations and open source to stay alive, no one should feel obliged to pay anything. Hence why i've not brought this up until now, i didn't want anyone to feel like they must donate. Sure there are also a lot of people who don't know they can support the Viewer but i've always felt that reminding people too often (like Youtube videos often do) is too much.

With how it is currently going it is absolutely going to be enough, the feedback has been quite positive and helpful.

  11. Not fast enough. You're amazing, and you do amazing work. As someone mentioned above, losing Black Dragon would be a significant blow to the Second Life photography community. We need you and Black Dragon.

  12. In case you can't continue anymore with the viewer, have you not thought or would there be a way to transfer/sell it to another person/work team to continue working over It?

    1. Technically speaking there is nothing to stop anyone from continueing the Viewer on their own.

Personally i do not "transfer" and especially not sell the project to anyone else for the sole reason that i do not think that anyone i know would continue the Viewer in the original spirit.

Every person has their own ideas how and what a Viewer should be and BD has always been an extreme case of this, i'm fairly certain that most others if they could take over would move the Viewer into a completely different direction, that is turn it more into Firestorm to put it bluntly. I have a fairly unique take on things and i don't think i could ever entrust anyone with this project keeping it the way i'd keep it, to be honest i have so massively different ideas and so little trust that i'm convinced the moment BD leaves my hands it will go straight towards everything i've always hated and avoided at all costs.

  15. I would love to support you, but unfortunately using an IMAC I can no longer use BD. A BD for MAC would be perfect. I and many others would love to contribute.

  16. BlackDragon is the most important tool within Secondlife, where photographers and filmmakers earn a living by working and making money. It's only fair that you, the user of BlackDragon, be a Patreon member. Your donation will be extremely important. Follow the link and become a Patreon member. Niran, I love you. https://www.patreon.com/c/niranvsl/posts

  17. With a reasonably high-end graphics card, I love rendering my online environments in as close to "full-pretty" mode as I can. For me, BD has been a complete game-changer for SL. Should the viewer actually die, I'll iikely hold on to whatever the final version is as long as possible before new SL features make it impractical.

It's not just the graphics. The UI design decisions have always been better for me than those in the default viewer or FS.

Honestly, Niran, if I were a better coder (I'm a sysadmin and a scripter, not really a developer) I would have been itching to collab with you on it for years. Since I'm actually NOT that good, I've been supporting the viewer via Patreon rather than with patch submissions! That support won't be going away unless and until you actualy quit.
